It’s true. Gamestop no longer sells new games. At least mine doesn’t. A while back I went there to purchase a copy of Burnout Paradise, only to find that not only was the used price almost as much as the new price, but the new games were already opened, and the disks were out of their cases. Now, I understand the desire to thwart theft. But to take away a consumers joy in opening a new game is like a kick in the nuts.
Yes, this is a rant. But it’s also a warning: Don’t buy new games from Gamestop. ‘Cause they ain’t new. That copy of Burnout Paradise? The disk they put in the case on checkout was scratched and had fingerprints on it. SCRATCHED, AND FINGERPRINTS. Do you know what that means? That means I payed full, new price for a USED game. Sure, no one had played it before, but if it is scratched and smudged, it is used. It is not new. Needless to say I made them give me a refund immediately. I then went to Wal-Mart and bought the game there. It actually still had the shrink wrap on it, imagine that!
Yesterday I visited Gamestop again, this time on a quest for Valkyria Chronicles half off, new. I love a good deal. However, I was once again greeted with whole shelves of new games…opened. It was horrific. Worse than the scariest Resident Evil moment, the goriest Dead Space scene. I knew I what I was getting into. But I just really wanted the game now.
So I bought the game. I get home, and try to get the two stickers on the case off, one touting the sale, the other the sale-price. Since the stickers were on the GAME CASE ITSELF, my “new” game now has sticker residue, that annoying white paper and sticky glue residue you can never get off, right across the front. That is my brand-new game. I should have had it shipped to me online, where the deal applied as well. I should have waited and then been rewarded with the pleasure of opening an actual new game – with no scratches, fingerprints, or sticker residue.
This is not to mention the attitudes of the associates or the complete ripoff they call a “trade-in program,” often times only giving $0.35 or less for a game. Yes, seriously. One of my games they wanted $0.10 for! I’m not idiot, I had only brought said games to Gamestop because I couldn’t get rid of them anywhere else – but 10 cents? I said no thanks, I’ll sell them for $1 easily at a yard sale this summer.
But that doesn’t bother me nearly as much as them opening all their new games, taking out the disks, and then putting the empty, opened cases out and calling “new”. What utter bullshit. How dumb do they think we are?
And the most insulting part is this: After you buy a “new” game, they then look for the disk, hastily and carelessly throw it in the case, slap the case shut, and then put a piece of tape across the case, taping it shut. What purpose does that serve other than to say “Hey, watch as we tape this shut right in front of you and claim it’s new, idiot.”
Oh, that left residue on the case as well. I’m grateful that I got Valkyria Chronicles for 50% off, but if Gamestop is going to continue to ravage all their new games, I’d like them to respect their customers enough to at least stop labeling them as new. Because they’re not. Buy a new game as a gift for someone from Gamestop, and they’ll look at it and think you’ve given them a used game. They’ll know you have, from the un-shrink wrapped box to the scratched and smudged disk. They’ll know.

dude they keep the unopened copies in the drawer behind the counter.
they only open ONE copy of the game unless its on the new release rack. and saying gamestop doesn’t sell new games just because they don’t want to have to chase some punk kid down in the parking lot because mommy won’t buy him RE5… seriously?

As I believe I stated in my post, mine does not. Mine opens them -all-. There’s nothing wrong with opening one for display, even though there are better options. If someone wants to buy that one display copy if they run out of unopened ones, fine.
But like I said, my local gamestop opens each and every game. Don’t ask me why. But they do.
And I never said anything about a kid, his mommy, or RE5. Seriously?

Yesterday, I bought a “new” Wii game from Gamestop. They grabbed a box from the shelf somewhere, took a CD out from behind the counter, put the CD in the case, and put a clear sticker on the box. I opened it hours later (probably around 10:30 PM), only to find some scratches and fingerprints on my so called, “new” game. I was still at the mall at the time.. but I believe Gamestop was already closed (since many of the other stores were either closed or getting ready to close), so I just went home. I’m so pissed at gamestop right now. I should’ve ordered my game from Amazon, or looked for it at Best Buy.. Ugh. They better let me return my game, or I’m never shopping there again. Gamestop is shit.

Actually in my area, the service is REALLY good. They took half an hour to look for THE BEST Oblivion and Fallout 3 disks they have. And the price stickers had no sticker residue. I guess that Gamestop just sucks. I even returned those two games for more than i bought in for, so I got extra cash for a new game, disk was spotless!

Good deal! You have a rare Gamestop. I’ve been to half a dozen in my area and at least that many in other states. So far they’ve all been the the same. Some are better than others, but all that I’ve been to have the same practice of opening new games, removing the discs whilst scratching and smudging them, and then smacking a couple stickers on the box that leave residue as an added insult.
You should definitely support your Gamestop. You have no reason not to. They obviously do right by you. Lucky chap! :)

I don’t understand why you’re freaking out. You are obviously over exaggerating the situation. I work at a GameStop and i’ve never ever heard of a store that opens every new copy of a game. Sure, we have our new game sections, but we only open 1-4 copies of each game (4 being as its a new release). We understand that gamers like to have that fresh copy right out of the box. As for the sale, which was probably our “game day sale”, yes all the new copies of the games are open due to the fact that we want you to know that they are on sale. Its called good marketing. You still bought the copy of the game didn’t you?
When we put the sticker on the case (to seal it), it is for return policy purposes so that you don’t go home, play the game, and then try to return it. If you don’t want the sticker then ask the employee to not put it on the case. As for the stickers on the case (price, ID on the back, Spine sticker) you can ask the employee for a fresh case as well. A good GameStop employee would even go in the back and shrink wrap it for you.
As for the scratched new games, I don’t at all believe this. When we take a new game out of its case, we put it in a sleeve, then in the cupboard, and it doesn’t move until you buy it. Its not like we go out in the parking lot and play Frisbee with them. You are just trying to come up with excuses to make your rant more meaningful.
Just to clear this up as well…we would NEVER sell a used game as new. EVER EVER EVER. Reason being is because that would lose us money. we make about 10-15% profit off of new games, whereas we make 100% profit from used. there would be no benefit to doing such a thing, and i’ve never heard of a GameStop doing so, ever.
Personally, I think that your rant is illegitimate. You don’t realize how dumb you sound, and i’m sure you don’t realize how annoying you are to people like me. Utilize Gamestop’s customer service. Us employees are there to help you, that’s our job. Its impossible to have ALL there new games opened (gutted) because for example: xb360 has around 700-1000 new game titles, if the store has 2 maybe three copies of each… that would fill up 4 whole racks (both sides) and a dump bin that holds about 500 games spined out and packed. that would have to be one VERY big store and doesnt make very much sense now does it.
Mobusaki… I hope this opens your eyes to why things happen the way things happen. Its not nice to lie, and over exaggerate to make yourself look good. If you have a problem in the future, try not to set up a gamestop hate fest. just go in and discuss it with an employee, im sure they can answer all your questions, and let you know things are the way they are for a reason. If all else fails, don’t shop there. WTF is stopping you from going elsewhere. if you still shop there then dont complain.

I asked them. They open all of them. You’ve taken my post personally. My problem isn’t with the low-level employees. They’re powerless. They just do what they’re told. My problem is with the suits, and some of the managers. I’m not sure if it is the manager’s fault or not, because this problem is reported at many Gamestops. Search Kotaku.
Also, I find it odd that you think opening new games and selling them at new prices is “good marketing.” You’re joking, right? You’re not actually serious, right?
I probably shouldn’t have wasted my time replying to you. You’re obviously either an irrational individual, or making an elaborate attempt at trolling. I can understand standing up for the company that employs you. I respect that. But defending legally questionable practices? That’s makes no sense.

they HAVE to keep the games out of the packages so no one steals them!
Plus, the game probably was handled wrong either at the factory or at the store. Maybe dropped a few times. either way, you got gypped.

They can put display boxes out and keep the games behind the counter. Then no-one can steal them, and people can still buy new games.

It’s my understanding that this practice has nothing to do with theft determent. They open several copies of new games to lend out to employees, because they want their employees to be knowledgeable and experience in new games so they can talk about them to the customers. While the end result doesn’t seem bad at all, I completely agree that they should not be selling these opened copies as new, especially because they HAVE BEEN USED. Given that used copies of newly released games are usually only $5 cheaper, it seems to me that it would make much more sense for GameStop to take the small loss on the few copies that they open up for employees. In reality, it’s not really a loss, but just an expense for keeping your employees up to date on the latest merchandise.
As to why a GameStop would open EVERY copy, well that doesn’t make much sense, and if it’s true it sounds like something shady might be going on at that particular store.
